The day

Eight miles out, a different Caribbean

Vieques sits eight miles off the mainland, and its water feels like a different country: clearer, quieter, and rimmed with seagrass meadows where green sea turtles come to graze. This crossing is our guides' favorite stretch of ocean, and it shows in how they run the day.

You will snorkel guided over reef and seagrass in prime turtle territory. Sightings are frequent, never guaranteed, because this is wild ocean and that is the point. Then the boat anchors at a white-sand beach for a deli lunch, cold drinks, beach games and the crew's slightly famous onboard karaoke. You are back at the marina around 3 p.m. with the best photos of your trip.

What you'll see snorkeling in Vieques

The seagrass meadows are the reason we make this crossing. Green sea turtles feed on them, and when one settles in to graze it will often stay put while you float above and watch. We also pass over coral gardens busy with reef fish in every color the Caribbean makes, and on many trips a ray glides across the sand below the group. The water on this side of Vieques tends to be calm and clear, which is exactly what you want for a first snorkel or a relaxed one.

The day starts in Fajardo, about an hour from San Juan by road, and the boat ride across to Vieques is part of the experience: open water, the east coast shrinking behind you, and quieter ocean ahead. If you're weighing your options, our guide covers where Vieques ranks among Puerto Rico's best snorkeling, and the short version is: near the top, mostly because of the turtles and the clarity.

One honest note on the price: the $160 price covers everything on board — there is no extra cost for gear, flotation, lunch or drinks. We would rather you spend the day looking down at seagrass than reaching for your wallet.

  • Green sea turtles feeding on the seagrass beds
  • Rays cruising the sandy bottom
  • Colorful reef fish over coral gardens
  • Calm, clear water made for easy snorkeling

Questions

Vieques All-Inclusive Excursion: FAQ

Will we see sea turtles?+
This trip snorkels the reefs and seagrass beds where green sea turtles feed, and sightings are frequent. They are wild animals, so no one can honestly guarantee them, but our guides take you to the right water at the right time of day. Our full sea turtle guide covers the details.
What makes Vieques worth the longer ride?+
Clearer water, far fewer boats, and healthy seagrass meadows that attract feeding turtles. It is the most memorable water most guests swim in all trip.
What is included in the price?+
Everything for the day: guided snorkel, all gear and flotation, deli lunch, soft and rum drinks, beach games and karaoke, plus free parking at the marina.
Can kids come? Can pregnant guests?+
Guests must be 5 or older. For safety reasons, pregnant guests are not permitted on this excursion.
What time are we back?+
Around 3 p.m. at Villa Marina in Fajardo, so your evening stays open.
Are vegetarian or vegan meals available?+
Yes, for an additional charge. Let us know when you book so the crew can have your meal ready.
What if I get seasick?+
The open-water crossing is the bounciest part of the day. If you're prone to motion sickness, take a non-drowsy remedy about an hour before departure, sit low and midship, and tell the crew — we cross these waters every day and will help you pick the steadiest spot on the boat.

The seagrass beds are eight miles away.

Vieques runs on select days and sells out first. Grab your date while it is open.
